Explaining Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Hyundai has made a commitment to being a leader in electric and hybrid vehicles, and over the past decade, our lineup of vehicles has grown to include a number of incredible options. From the NEXO, to the IONIQ lineup, to our hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, you can find an efficient, long-range vehicle that will save you at the pump. You might be wondering, though, what is the difference between an EV and a hybrid, or a PHEV for that matter. The team here at
Abbotsford Hyundai breaks it down for you.

Hybrid Vehicle

Models: Elantra, Santa Fe, Tucson

Hybrid vehicles supplement the gas engine with a full-parallel electric motor. This system runs at the same time, automatically switching to let the electrical system supplement the internal combustion engine, while induction braking recharges the battery on the go. This symbiosis is what gives hybrids their incredible fuel efficiency, and Hyundai’s hybrids can get up to 1,000km on a single tank of gas on select models. You’re still filling up at the gas pump, but not nearly as often.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

Models: Tucson

PHEV technology is the happy medium between a regular hybrid and an EV. Unlike the hybrid, it has a fully independent electric powertrain, and you can drive full electric for shorter distances; useful for running errands, or the daily commute. Because you use the battery more, you can plug them in like an EV for a faster recharge. Unlike an EV, though, it also has a gasoline engine for the longer haul, and can run in hybrid mode for those road-trip distances you need to travel. If you’re suffering from range anxiety, but want the convenience of an EV, this might be the option for you.

Electric Vehicle (EV)

Models: KONA, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6

No internal combustion engines here, and no stopping for gas ever again. The EV lineup of Hyundai vehicles rely solely on full electric powertrains, and produce zero emissions. You plug them in overnight at any standard outlet, and they’re charged up by morning. Or you can use high capacity chargers to restore up to 80% of a charge in an hour. If you’ve been suffering range anxiety, you don’t need to fret over a Hyundai, Our vehicles get impressive range out of a full charge, topping out around an estimated 488 km on select models. As the average daily commute for a resident of BC is roughly 20 km, you wouldn’t even need to plug in every day!
